XII. Sacrifice of the Horse

high-definition creative commons posters depicting the Sacrifice of the Horse from the Mahābhārata together with further information.

To atone for the sins of the war and establish his undisputed rule, Yudhishthira performs the Ashvamedha (Horse Sacrifice). A consecrated horse is set free to wander for a year, followed by Arjuna and his army. All kings whose lands the horse enters must either submit or fight. The successful completion of the sacrifice cleanses the king of his guilt, restores Vedic order, and marks the beginning of a peaceful era.
