Maṇimēkhalai and her companion Sutamatī go to the royal garden to gather flowers. While there, the Cōḻa prince Udayakumāra sees Maṇimēkhalai and pursues her. She takes refuge inside a crystal pavilion and hides from him. The prince is persistent, but the goddess Maṇimēkhalā intervenes, putting Sutamatī to sleep and transporting Maṇimēkhalai away to the island of Maṇipallavam to protect her and guide her spiritual path.
