On his return voyage, the jealous translator Nyö has Marpa’s books thrown into the Ganges. Marpa responds without anger, singing a song of shame, and later teaches the view to Nepalese disciples. At a border town, he dreams of Saraha, who blesses his body, speech, and mind and teaches mahāmudrā. Marpa then sings a profound song at Kyerphu. He visits Nyö to copy texts but is refused. Returning to Lhotrak, he finds his parents dead, then begins gathering gold for a second journey to India.
