He meets his first chief disciple, Ngokton Chödor of Shung, teaches Hevajra, and heals nine women. In Phen, he gives abhiṣekas, then meets the merchant Marpa Golek, who invites him north. Golek tests Marpa’s apparent miserliness, realizes it is devotion to dharma, and becomes his disciple. Marpa gathers much gold, returns to Lhotrak, gives teachings to Ngokpa, Tsurtön, and others, and sings a song recounting his Indian gurus and journeys. His wealth and fame increase, and he marries Dagmema.
