Born in Bengal, the scholar Candragomin abandoned his marriage to Princess Tārā because she shared her name with his tutelary deity. Condemned by the king to be drowned in the Ganges, he was miraculously saved when the goddess Tārā formed the island of Candra. He later entered Nalanda, famously mastering Pāṇini's grammar and engaging in historic intellectual debates with the Madhyamika master Candrakīrti.
