After heretics repeatedly burned Buddhist temples and texts, a devout Brāhmaṇa woman named Prasannaçila vowed to give birth to sons who would propagate and preserve the endangered Abhidharma. Her union with a Kṣatriya produced Asanga, whom she fiercely dedicated to spiritual practice. Asanga became a celebrated Saint, spreading Mahāyāna doctrines widely and obtaining the profound Dharmasrotah-samādhi after years of intensive forest meditation.
