Sthiramati was a brilliant student of Vasubandhu who surpassed his master in the specific study of the Abhidharma. Tradition holds that in his past life, he was a dove that gained spiritual merit simply by listening to Vasubandhu recite sacred texts. Reborn as a human, he quickly mastered the five sciences, studied at Nalanda, authored numerous scholarly commentaries, and trained eminent pupils like Pūrṇavardhana.
