9. Dharmakīrti

high-definition creative commons posters depicting Dharmakīrti from Buston’s History of Buddhism together with further information.

Born into a heretical Brāhmaṇic family, Dharmakīrti turned to Buddhism and vowed to vanquish all heretics after being driven away by his uncle Kumārila. He studied Dignāga's Pramāṇa-samuccaya three times under Īśvarasena, ultimately correcting his teacher’s own misunderstandings of the text. Dharmakīrti composed the monumental Pramāṇa-vārtika, predicting that his profound logic would match the deep, vast nature of the ocean.
