In a past life, the Bodhisatta, Tulakapaṇḍita, sought to save thirty-three falsely accused monks sentenced to death by King Cinna. Using his family’s gold and bartering his wife and son, he ransomed thirty-two of them. To save the final novice, Tulakapaṇḍita offered his own life. Fortunately, his father arrived in time, ransoming him with gold. The monks became arahants, the king reformed, and the evil advisor fell into hell.
