The Buddha recounts how, in a past life under Buddha Saraṇaṅkara, he was a householder’s son who gifted kaṭhina-cloth to achieve future enlightenment. Hearing of this supreme gift, King Kambala also presented kaṭhina-cloth yearly, learning of its extraordinary karmic rewards—which far surpass all other offerings in bringing wealth, heavenly happiness, and ultimate liberation. Today, the Buddha identifies King Kambala as Sāriputta and himself as that householder’s son.
