16 The Cowherd’s Hut

high-definition creative commons posters depicting The Cowherd’s Hut from Fifty Lannā Jātaka Stories together with further information.

The Buddha relates how a cowherd’s simple act of building a roadside hut earned him rebirth in a beautiful, heavenly palace. He then recounts a past life as King Dhammarāja, who constructed four city-gate huts, distributed immense daily charity, and was invited by Sakka to visit the deva-world. Inspired by heavenly bliss, the king and his subjects redoubled their meritorious deeds, ultimately securing rebirth in heaven through their outstanding generosity.
