King Siricudamani of Bārānasī, a generous ruler, desired to donate parts of his own body for supreme enlightenment. Sakka, king of the devas, tested his resolve by appearing as a half-bodied brahman requesting the king’s other half. Despite his family’s immense grief, the king resolutely allowed two yakkhas to saw him in half. Moved by this ultimate sacrifice, Sakka healed him. The king was later reborn as the supreme Buddha.
