The Buddha explains that Prince Nandakumāra and his followers instantly received monastic robes and bowls due to past merit. In a past life as the rich brahman Surucira, the Bodhisatta invited Buddha Sumaṅgala and his massive retinue for alms. Assisted by the king of devas, Sakka, who miraculously built a magnificent pavilion, Surucira donated the eight requisites to the monks. Consequently, Sumaṅgala prophesied Surucira’s future Buddhahood as Gotama Buddha himself.
