24 The Two-Headed Swan

high-definition creative commons posters depicting The Two-Headed Swan from Fifty Lannā Jātaka Stories together with further information.

In the past, a devoted husband and wife wished to remain united. Consequently, they were reborn as a single golden swan with two heads on Mount Himavanta. Captured and presented to King Dhammika of Bārāṇasī, a cunning minister sowed distrust between the swan’s heads by whispering to only one. Consumed by jealousy and suspicion, the heads fought and tore their single body apart, demonstrating how easily anger can destroy unity.
