King Mahāratha sends a miraculous Buddha image to King Pañcāla, converting the unbelieving ruler. To gild a new sandalwood Buddha image, the poor Bodhisatta Viriyapaṇḍita sells his wife Sujātā and son Revata to purchase gold. When the gold proves insufficient, Viriyapaṇḍita sacrifices his own flesh, which the god Sakka transforms into gold to complete the image. Impressed, Sakka heals him; King Pañcāla reunites Viriyapaṇḍita with his family and bestows wealth.
