Sāriputta asks about the merit of writing down the Tipiṭaka. The Buddha explains that in the time of the former Buddha Gotama, he was a minister who wrote and had others write the scriptures to preserve them for five thousand years. He then enjoyed celestial rewards and ruled as a universal monarch. The Buddha praises the act of writing scriptures, which brings happiness and prevents rebirth in lower realms.
