King Dhammasoṇḍaka of Benares felt royal glory was hollow without the Buddha’s Dhamma. Seeking truth, he entered the forest where Sakra tested him disguised as a terrifying demon. The demon offered a sacred verse in exchange for the King’s life. Driven by a quest for omniscience, the King joyfully leaped from a cliff. Sakra caught him, revealed his identity, and taught him the profound truth concerning the impermanence of things.
