Queen Vessāmittā, the devout consort of Kosambī’s king, refused to marry a conquering rival after her husband’s death in battle. Enraged, the conqueror ordered her burned alive on a pyre. As she was cast into the flames, she took refuge in the Triple Gem: the Buddha, Dhamma, and Saṅgha. The fire could not harm her. Witnessing this miracle, the king repented, asked for forgiveness, and honored her as his mother.
