In a past life, a poor tailor offered beans to Buddha Vipassī. Reborn as King Mandhātā, he became a universal monarch who could rain jewels from the sky. His insatiable greed led him to rule the heavens alongside Sakka, outliving thirty-six celestial kings. Desiring Sakka’s entire throne, his merit failed. Falling back to earth, he died, warning that even vast heavenly pleasures cannot fully satisfy the unending human kāmataṇhā craving.
