In Sāvatthī, a man sold a betel leaf to a thirsty traveler. Later, when shipwrecked together, the traveler gave his only plank to the seller out of gratitude. Witnessing this selfless act, the goddess Maṇimekhalā rescued both men and returned them safely home. This story highlights how even small acts of virtue and gratitude (kataveditā) invite divine protection, guiding the righteous toward safety and heaven.
