18 Marutta and His Dog

high-definition creative commons posters depicting Marutta and His Dog Story from the Rasavāhiṇī (Heart Streams) together with further information.

In Homagāma, Marutta Brāhmaṇa healed a diseased dog, which followed him out of gratitude. Following a personal tragedy, Marutta renounced his home to become a forest ascetic. His vengeful wife and her new husband plotted his murder. The loyal dog repeatedly chewed the assassin's bowstring to delay him, eventually attacking the man to save Marutta’s life. Grateful, the ascetic Marutta later attained a very profound state of full spiritual liberation.
