Sun Yüan-chen’s plan works: Ma Liu persuades the clan, and Ma Yü’s whole estate is formally signed over to Wang Ch’ung-yang. Wang earns praise by funding widows, orphans, farmers’ debts and public works, and builds retreat huts in the mansion. Ma Yü and Sun Yüan-chen take vows as Ma Tan-yang and Sun Pu-erh, live apart as friends in the Tao, and hear Wang teach that Earlier Heaven cannot be described.
