At Lao-tzu’s birthplace the four disciples, moved by his legend, honor the Ancient One with poems; T’an Ch’ang-chen then exposes Liu Ch’ang-sheng’s dream of the Empress of Heaven and his plan to dissolve lust in brothels. They part ways. Reaching Hua Shan, Hao T’ai-ku digs seventy-two caves over ten years, surrendering each to arriving hermits. His impatient disciple severs his rope; Hao survives, then leaps from the cliff and vanishes.
