22 A Nine Day Fast

high-definition creative commons posters depicting A Nine Day Fast from Seven Taoist Masters together with further information.

Ch’iu Ch’ang-ch’un’s wish to feed Ma Tan-yang brings an earth god’s gift of rice, yet Ma angrily splits their cushion and vanishes underground to the Kao mountains, attaining the Tao. A fortune-teller takes Ch’iu’s begged bowl and foretells starvation, citing Po I and Shu Ch’i. Ch’iu fasts nine days and nights in a deep gorge until a flood floats him a red peach; strengthened, he climbs out of the canyon.
