Ch’iu fasts nine days in a T’ai Shan shrine until robbers led by Chao Pi arrive. They force food into his mouth and threaten him, but Chao Pi relents; Ch’iu explains karma, refuses their silver, and persuades them to abandon robbery. Later, about to hang himself, he is halted by the herb-gatherer T’ai-pai, who teaches that destiny lies in the heart, not the face; Ch’iu resolves to finish his training.
