Drought threatens the capital, so the emperor summons Ch’iu, whose three-day prayer to the Jade Emperor brings rain and saves the harvest. Ch’iu then predicts the empress bears a son, but Zen Master Pai-yün of White Cloud Monastery divines a girl and wagers the monastery against Ch’iu’s head. Ch’iu’s fairy swaps the female spirit for a male one. The court sees a prince, and Pai-yün’s elder demands matching Taoist monks.
