While staying at Beluva during the rainy season, the Buddha falls gravely ill with sharp, life-threatening pains. Realising it is not yet time for his final passing without addressing the Saṅgha, he suppresses the illness through sheer willpower. Upon recovering, he tells Ānanda that he has taught everything openly and that the monks should live as their own islands, with the Dhamma as their refuge.
