A disciple of Āḷāra Kālāma named Pukkusa meets the Buddha and is impressed by his profound serenity. The Buddha recounts a time he remained in deep meditation during a violent thunderstorm that killed two farmers and four oxen nearby, completely oblivious to the noise. Inspired, Pukkusa goes for refuge and offers the Buddha two robes of golden cloth. When draped, the Buddha’s skin glows so radiantly it outshines the gold, signaling his imminent passing.
