The funeral pyre refuses to ignite despite the Mallas’ efforts. The venerable Anuruddha explains that the deities are waiting for Mahākassapa, who is traveling to Kusinārā with five hundred monks. Upon arrival, Mahākassapa pays his respects at the Buddha’s feet. Only after he and the monks have finished their salutations does the pyre spontaneously burst into flames. This event underscores the spiritual seniority and importance of Mahākassapa within the Saṅgha.
