After the cremation, several kings and clans demand the Buddha’s relics, leading to a potential conflict. A Brahmin named Doṇa intervenes, reminding them of the Buddha’s teachings on peace. He divides the remains into eight equal portions for the various claimants, who then build stūpas over them in their respective lands. This distribution ensures that the Buddha’s physical remains serve as a focus for devotion and practice across the region.
