The Famine at Verañjā

high-definition creative commons posters depicting The Famine at Verañjā from Stories from the Vinayapiṭaka together with further information.

The brahmin Verañja challenges the Buddha regarding respect and monastic discipline. The Buddha refutes each criticism, defining true spiritual qualities and explaining his spiritual seniority through the egg-shell metaphor. Despite facing a harsh famine during the vassa at Verañjā, the Buddha declines Mahāmoggallāna’s psychic interventions. Addressing Sāriputta, he explains that rules and Pātimokkha recitation are established only when corrupting conditions manifest in the Saṅgha.
