05 The Uposatha and the Pātimokkha

high-definition creative commons posters depicting The Uposatha and the Pātimokkha from Stories from the Vinayapiṭaka together with further information.

King Bimbisāra suggests assembling on lunar observance days, prompting the Buddha to allow gatherings and teaching. To prevent silent assemblies, the Buddha authorizes teaching the Dhamma and establishes the biweekly Pātimokkha recitation as the formal legal Observance (Uposatha). Monks must declare purity or confess offenses during this assembly. The practice is restricted to once per fortnight within a single unified residence.
