12 The Kaṭhina Celebration

high-definition creative commons posters depicting The Kaṭhina Celebration from Stories from the Vinayapiṭaka together with further information.

Thirty monks traveling to Sāvatthī for a retreat are delayed in Sāketa by rains. Arriving afterward with drenched robes, they meet the Buddha, who establishes the kaṭhina ceremony. Monks who spread the kaṭhina receive five privileges, including traveling without full robes. The Buddha details proper formal motions, strict manufacturing requirements for suitable cloth, valid spreading procedures within the boundary, and eight grounds for withdrawing privileges.
