Devadatta, corrupted by gain and honor, desires to lead the Community. He gains Prince Ajātasattu’s favor and asks for five ascetic practices. The Buddha refuses. Devadatta then incites Ajātasattu to kill his father and sends assassins after the Buddha. The Buddha converts the assassins and tames the elephant Nāḷāgiri. Devadatta creates a schism, taking five hundred monks, but Sāriputta and Moggallāna bring them back.
