After the Buddha’s final Nibbāna, Mahākassapa convenes five hundred arahants at Rājagaha to recite the Teaching and Monastic Discipline, lest false teachings prevail. Upāli recites the Vinaya and Ānanda the Discourses, with Ānanda attaining arahantship just before the council. The elders decide not to abolish the lesser training rules, and Ānanda confesses several wrongdoings. Channa receives the highest penalty, then attains arahantship, and the council concludes.
