The brahmin Bāvari, having given away his wealth, is threatened by a beggar: his head will split in seven days. Terrified, he learns from a god that only a Buddha knows the meaning of head-splitting. He sends his sixteen students—including Ajita and Piṅgiya—to find the Buddha. They travel to Sāvatthī, where the Buddha answers Ajita’s unspoken question, revealing that ignorance is the head and understanding is its splitter.
