Puṇṇaka asks why seers, nobles, and brahmins offer many sacrifices to the gods. The Buddha answers that they do so yearning for mundane existence, driven by old age and the passion for existence. When Puṇṇaka asks if such sacrificers have crossed over birth and old age, the Buddha says no. Only one who has discerned far and near, is peaceful, and free from yearning has crossed over birth and old age.
