📷 About Photo Dharma

Bhante Ānandajoti has lived in the East since 1987 — mainly Sri Lanka, India, and Malaysia — and ordained in the Theravāda tradition in 1995 and received higher ordination the following year. Along with his practice as a Buddhist monk, his roles have included editor, translator, photographer, storyteller, curator, and webmaster.

He was given a camera in 2005 and began photographing the temples he stayed in and the pilgrimage places he visited. In 2009 he travelled to Borobudur in Indonesia and documented the monument so extensively that it could not be contained in a photo album — and the Photo Dharma website was born. The site now holds thousands of photographs and storybooks from Buddhist sites across Asia, published with a minimal copyright so that others — Buddhists especially — have a ready stock of material they can freely and legally use.

The collection has grown to include the work of guest photographers, 360° panoramas, and illustrated storybooks that bring the Dhamma to life through image and word.
