Illustrations based on The Light of Asia, Edwin Arnold’s epic poem, which for many in the West was their first introduction to Buddhism. The Light of Asia is in the form of a narrative poem, the book describes the life and time of Prince Siddharta Gautama, who became the Buddha, the Awakened One. The book presents his life, character, and philosophy in a series of eight chapters. It is a free adaptation of the the Chinese translation of the Sanskrit Abhiniṣkramaṇasutta and the Lalitavistara Sūtra. The poetry is outstanding in its lyricism and beautiful language.
