The brahmin Bāvari, cursed by a beggar that his head will split in seven days, sends his sixteen students to find the Buddha, who alone knows the meaning of head-splitting. At Sāvatthī, each student asks profound questions about suffering, ignorance, craving, and liberation. The Buddha answers that ignorance envelops the world, craving defiles it, and mindfulness and wisdom free it. He teaches that seeing the world as empty, abandoning craving, and not clinging enables one to cross birth and old age. The students attain awakening, and the text praises these teachings as the path going beyond saṃsāra.
