The Life of Milarepa recounts the eleventh-century Tibetan yogin’s journey from sinner to Buddha based on the 11th Century Biography by Tsangnyön Heruka. Born Töpaga, he suffers poverty after his father’s death, then commits murder and casts hailstorms through black magic. Tormented by remorse, he seeks dharma and meets Marpa Lotsawa, who subjects him to years of abuse and tower-building to purify his karma. Finally receiving initiations, Milarepa meditates in mountain caves for years, living on nettles, attaining realisation and miracles. He gathers disciples like Rechungpa and Gampopa, and dies at eighty-four after accepting poisoned curds. His relics are carried to a pure land by ḍākinīs. The text portrays him as a Tibetan Buddha.
