Source of the Stories
These storybooks are based on the Rasavāhinī, which is a famous 14th-century collection of Buddhist moral stories written in Pāli by the monk Vedeha Thera in Sri Lanka, and which seems to be a revision of an old Pāli translation made from an original Singhalese compilation by Raṭṭhapāla Thera of the Mahāvihāra. They contain 20 of the storries, which were set in India. The work was written in an attractive and simple style similar to the Jātaka tales and mixes moral lessons, Buddhist philosophy, and historical folklore, and was designed to inspire devotion, cultivate ethical behavior, and highlight the power of good karma and Buddhist pilgrimage sites.
