Source of the Stories

These stories recount the Buddha’s teaching and the early history of the monastic community. It opens with the Buddha at Verañjā, converting the brahmin Verañja and recounting his enlightenment. It then details the circumstances leading to the first four major monastic rules (pārājika). Further sections describe how many of the other rules came to be laid down, including the ordination of Mahāpajāpatī Gotamī and the establishment of the nuns’ order, and also the First Council at Rājagaha where the teachings were recited, and the Second Council at Vesālī a century later, which rejected ten lax practices.
