This collection presents fifty birth-stories from the Paññāsa Jātaka, a compilation of stories popular in Southeast Asian Buddhism, probably written in Lannā. Each story recounts a past life of the Bodhisatta—the future Buddha—illustrating virtues like generosity, patience, truthfulness, and renunciation. Kings give away their kingdoms, queens sacrifice their lives, animals display extraordinary compassion, and Sakka, king of the gods, frequently tests the Bodhisatta’s resolve. Through these vivid narratives, the Buddha teaches his disciples about karma, the fruits of merit, and the long path to enlightenment. The collection concludes with teachings on the merit of writing scriptures, making and repairing Buddha-images, and maintaining precepts, showing how ordinary acts lead to awakening.
